The various theories include heat caused by friction, radon gas and piezoelectricity an electric charge accumulating in quartz rocks as tectonic plates move. In 2003, NASA physicist Dr Friedemann Freund carried out lab experiments, which suggested that earthquake lights are caused by electrical activity in rocks. He said shockwaves from earthquakes can change the electrical properties of silicon and oxygen-containing minerals, allowing them to transmit currents and emit light. But Professor David Brumbaugh, at the Arizona Earthquake Information Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, thinks the theory can be considered only a 'possible explanation' at best. 'Although Freunds theory seems promising, the answer may be a bit more complicated,' he said.
More: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2528351/From-Costa-Ricas-great-balls-wandering-rocks-Death-Valley-The-10-natural-phenomenon-modern-science-explain.html

Thats not enough jobsduring the same period of time following the 1981-82 recession, the economy created nearly 15 million jobsbut its pretty good as an electoral sound bite. And if Americans have a tangible sense that things are getting better, it will benefit the party in power. That leaves Obamacare as the Democrats single-biggest concern going into the 2014 midterms. Conventional wisdom seems to be that this disruptive program will forever be an albatross around the necks of Democrats, who passed the law in 2010 with virtually no Republican support. But its worth asking: How much worse can Obamacare get? And with expectations now set remarkably low, is it possible the health law could end up looking better in 2014?
More: http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/why-obama-will-have-a-much-better-year-in-2014-152551670.html

During a recent interview , House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi criticized the deportations saying, Our view of the law is, if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation. I dont see any reason for these deportations, she added . On December 5 Raul Grijalva, a Democrat Congressman from Arizona and 28 other House Democrats sent a letter to the White House request the suspension of further deportations. Dear Mr. President, the letter reads , The undersigned Members of Congress respectfully request that you suspend any further deportations and expand the successful deferred action program to all those who would be potential citizens under immigration reform. Barack Obama: 'Kanye West's music is outstanding'
Kanye West's "Bound 2" While Seth Rogen, James Franco and Ellen Degeneres got plenty of laughs for spoofing Kanye West's "Bound 2" single, one former soul singer is less than pleased by the popularity of the rapper's track. our editor recommends Kanye West's 'Bound 2' Video Inspires Ellen DeGeneres' Holiday Card (Video) Ricky Spicer, the former soul singer of The Ponderosa Twins Plus One, filed a lawsuit on Monday in New York court against West, as well as Roc-a-Fella Records, Universal Music Group and Island Def Jam Music Group. Has a Pop Star Ever Had as Influential a Year as Kanye West Just Had?
His ascendance is evidenced by the amount and diversity of attention his work attracts, the extreme critical and cultural benefit-of-the-doubt extended to him, preciously rare for any artist in any form. When Yeezus dropped, its most immediately beloved track was the closer, Bound 2, the hit buried at the end and the nearest thing the record offered to classic Kanye. There was the cleverly obscure soul sample , the lovely hook from Charlie Wilson, the irrepressible play of the lyrics, knowingly sending up his own tabloid romance: Yo, we made it Thanksgiving / Maybe we can make it to Christmas. A perfect line: funny, stupid, arrogant, simultaneously self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating. It doesnt even bother to rhyme. Then last month the video came out, four minutes of West and his fiancee, Kim Kardashian, having what must be unpleasantly nerve-wracking sex atop a speeding motorcycle, careening through the worlds most garish Trapper Keeper.
More: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/music_box/2013/12/kanye_west_he_may_have_no_social_graces_but_we_ignore_yeezus_at_our_peril.html

He then used the term in reference to the hip-hop star again in April 2012 when he admitted that he preferred West's Watch The Throne partner Jay Z. In a new interview with People magazine, Obama was asked whether he would rather socialise with West and his wife Kim Kardashian or the cast of the US TV show Duck Dyntasty. Although Obama said he'd choose the TV stars, he added: "Kanye's music is outstanding though. I've got a lot of his stuff on my iPad. If it was a concert, then I might not mind listening to him." California Community Replaces Stolen Gifts for Soldier's Family
Robberies, burglaries and thefts accounted for most of the rest. In one eyebrow-raising tapes instance, a man drunkenly "stole his neighbor's lawn mower and some frozen food items," according to the pardon message. A California woman burglarized a home "and took food to feed her children," another message states. The number of people receiving pardons just before Christmas fell one short of the total number of pardons Brown handed down in 2012. Brown pardoned 128 convicted criminals in 2012, 79 of them on Christmas Eve, a marked increase from the 21 pardons he issued in 2011. The gubernatorial pardons came several days after President Obama commuted the sentences of eight federal inmates serving long terms for crack-cocaine related offenses, Obama's latest effort to soften a legacy of harsh drug-related penalties. Residents of Lodi, Calif., joined together to replace Christmas gifts and other items stolen from the home of an active-duty soldier just before he returned from Afghanistan. Cpl. Christopher Petrossian was getting ready to surprise his wife, Cheryl, and their two daughters at the Sacramento airport last week when he received a call informing him that their home had been robbed. About $5,000 worth of items, including their gifts and electronic equipment, were taken, ABC News reports. Officer Eric Bradley was one of the police officers to respond to the break in, and when Bradley discovered that the burglarized home belonged to a soldier and his family, he encouraged his fellow police department employees to donate money and gift cards to the Petrossians.
Read more: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20769382,00.html

On Monday, a judge appointed Dr. Paul Fisher, chief of pediatric neurology at Stanford Children's Hospital, to evaluate Jahi as an independent expert. Fisher testified Tuesday that Jahi meets the criteria for brain death. Alameda Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo previously ruled that the hospital must hold off on any decisions regarding discontinuing life support until December 30 and encouraged both sides to work together.
Read more: http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/24/health/jahi-mcmath-girl-brain-dead/index.html

"On the other hand, our primary goal is to prevent consumer deception." The national standard of "all or virtually all" leaves plenty of wiggle room for interpretation. The FTC will suggest ways for companies to comply, but the decision on what meets the FTC guidelines is left to the nation's civil courts, just as California civil courts determine whether a product meets the state standard. In California, it's against state law to include a "Made in America" or "Made in the USA" label when any part of the product "has been entirely or substantially made outside of the United States." That means every single part essentially twitter has to be made and assembled in the United States to carry a "Made in the USA" label in California. But representatives for business say it's a standard that's virtually impossible to meet in today's global market. A proposed revision of the law, SB 661, would allow goods containing foreign-made parts to be advertised as "Made in America" or similar phrases -- as long as the parts cannot be found in the United States and as long as the foreign parts constitute a "negligible part" of the final product. December 24, 2013 (AP) Health officials say test results have fallen within an expected range for a Southern California high school where a student was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Riverside County health officials said Monday that 126 students at Indio High School had positive skin tests for possible exposure to the contagious illness and are being asked to follow-up with chest X-rays. More than 1,300 people were tested on Friday during a four-hour clinic at the school. The county health department says no more than 10 or 15 percent of students should test positive. Officials last week called for the testing after a student was diagnosed with tuberculosis in November. Barbara Cole, the department's director of disease control, says two other students who had abnormal chest X-rays are still being examined for the disease.
Read more: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/california-schools-tb-tests-expected-range-21318909

Font Page 1 of 1 Ledy Ordonez isn't surprised that Latinos in California have been slow to sign up for coverage under federal health law, even though they've been a top priority for enrollments in the state. California School's TB Tests in Expected Range
Family members and their lawyer said after the proceedings that they had not yet decided whether to dispute the medical findings or appeal the latest decision by Alameda County Superior Judge Evelio Grillo to a http://lyndonwphm.blogs.experienceproject.com/2697549.html higher court. Jahi was admitted to Children's Hospital and Resource Center in Oakland on December 9 for surgery to remove her tonsils but ended up being declared brain dead three days later following complications from the operation, hospital officials have said. The family's lawyer, Christopher Dolan, said the surgery, aimed at treating Jahi's sleep apnea, was considered routine, but after surgery Jahi began bleeding profusely, suffered a heart attack and then brain swelling.
